SafeFire: Enhancing Firefighter Health & Performance

SafeFire Project focus on firefighters health and performance conditions by proposing innovative approaches integrating physiological and environmental data monitoring, intelligent data analysis, and effective communication mechanisms. The main objectives are to improve firefighters’ health status, prevent hazardous situations, and explore and integrate monitored information to support team management decisions, including team rotations and special needs.

Wearable Prototypes in Firefighter Corporations

New wearable prototypes were tested and compared with a standard medical evaluation within a population of firefighters from Corporations of Góis/Alvares, Lousã and Castanheira de Pêra. Evaluation parameters included the heart rate, ECG (electrocardiogram), and temperature in rest and movement. Usability and confort was also tested. The prototypes performed in accordance with the medical evaluation and responded well laso under movement. Firefighters accepted well the technology which does not poses constraints to their movement and working performance.

Live Fire Tests with Safefire Prototypes

Field tests with live fire in a controlled environment were conducted on August 1. Two firefighters wore Safefire prototypes beneath their standard gear during these tests. The aim was to simulate body movements in real-life scenarios of equipment handling and firefighting.

The tests were carried out at Adai - LEIF | Forest Fire Research Laboratory, located at the Lousã Aerodrome.

As part of the SafeFire project, emphasizing firefighter well-being and performance, an innovative wearable prototype has been created in a form of a t-shirt. This t-shirt incorporates flexible electrodes woven into the fabric, allowing real-time measurement of the heart muscle's electrical activity (electrocardiogram) in a non-intrusive manner. This provides continuous health and safety monitoring, especially beneficial for fire department members and fire and rescue operations. In testing at the University of Coimbra's medical faculty, this innovative prototype will be revealed at an upcoming trade fair 'Exponor' (Matosinhos - Porto, from 21-22 February 2024) by the industrial partner Latino Group. It signifies a major leap in merging technology with firefighting, offering improved occupational health and emergency response activities.
